The current generation of the Lexus IS, when it was revealed in 2020, was welcomed into the world like a newborn. It offers a great balance between sportiness and sophistication, which makes it an excellent product from the Japanese brand. It’s like a BMW launching the 3 Series, and very quickly, the world is outsmarting it – and then, it starts nibbling among enthusiasts the moment the M3 is ready for production.
similarly, Lexus I did the same with 2022 IS 350 F Sport. It comes with additional options, even better refinement — and the magical combination of a front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports sedan means it has a German bully in its sights: the BMW M3. A bewildering and equally sinister car.
The 2022 Lexus IS F Sport also gets a new memory package and electric rear awning as an additional option. The M3 may have a strong heritage to back it up, but Lexus doesn’t make any bones about it. So we dig deeper, even after our first exclusive drive, to see if she wears a cloak.
‘Stealthy’ and ‘Sharp’ best distinguish the sporty design of the Lexus IS 350 F
We won’t be exaggerating – the IS 350 F Sport looks a thousand times better than the BMW. It does indeed have a large mesh, but the outline is perfectly in line with the rest of the silhouette. There are plenty of aerodynamic parts to this sharp-looking sports sedan. It includes front and rear fenders, a rear lip spoiler, 19-inch F-Sport wheels, and larger rear tires, plus a cool-air intake with sound generator, F-Sport badges, and F-Sport exhaust, which we’ll come up with later.
The situation is similar to an athlete. Not a sumo wrestler, but more of a black belt champion in karate. Those strong fenders that accommodate the huge wheels, and the fact that they’re wide and low just add more to the design you’ll take in. You know this is a high-performance intent car, the moment you look at it. The lines may seem a bit too much for some of you, but we love how they add aggressiveness to the look of the Lexus.
The stylish headlights look like the ends of a samurai sword. DRLs are located along with a distinctive L shape within the group. The headlights are positioned in such a way that, if you see the car approaching you from a distance – it looks low, almost like a supercar, and squats. To add to it, the hood slopes nicely and low.
The sharp lines on the sides give it a powerful look, and the sloping rear quarter columns look great. Again, toward the rear, the F-Sport looks like it’s sitting on its buttocks, with its wide hips pushed out. Anyone looking at the L-shaped blade-shaped light bar, which runs the width of the rear, is likely to pick up speed and catch a close-up glimpse of the car.
2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport The comfortable interior has a luxurious allure
The interior is the place to be; The stainless-steel friction plates that adorn the door sills look great, and the F Sport front seat surfaces look elegant, especially if they’re upholstered in Round Red. Features include heated and ventilated functions that come standard for the front seats. There’s even a heated leather steering wheel, perforated leather transmission, F Sport accelerator pedal, brake pedal, footrest and plenty of other F Sport details inside. Active Volume Control enhances the sound from the V6 engine.
You get a 10.3-inch touchscreen that is offered in variants that feature navigation, or the Mark Levinson Premium audio package. It also has 17 speakers with a 1800W woofer. Then there are the usual stuff like Amazon Alexa integration and more tech appeal.
2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport gets V6 power
The IS 350 F Sports has a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The IS 350 F Sport can be had in either a rear-wheel drive design only or an AWD setup, depending on the driver’s intent when at the wheel. Which comes with rear-wheel drive paired with the Sport Direct Shift 8-speed automatic box, also found on the IS 300 RWD.
The AWD version, on the one hand, gets a 6-speed automatic. While the RWD version of the IS 350 F Sport can sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, the AWD model can do so in 5.7 seconds. Our colleague Bradley drove the car earlier this month. He seemed happy at first, and upon starting the car, he felt it looked just fine. He’s left wanting a V8 from the IS 500, but that’s highly unlikely, given how downsized the engine is these days.
It’s a naturally aspirated V6, and he quickly starts wishing it was a turbocharger or a supercharger. The steering wasn’t full of feel, according to him, and other reports: “The IS 350 F SPORT looks like a red arrow (red arrow drove) took a 10-week CrossFit class, but out of the box, he drove like a regular mall walker.”
Torque wasn’t complimenting him either, but he also went on to say how affordable four-cylinder engines are available in sports sedans like these. After fiddling with Drive Mode Select, he put the car in Sport S+, quickly gripped the paddle shifters, and noticed the engine had enough power inside.
The BMW M3 has a capable competitor in the Lexus IS 350 F sports car
