Luxury sports compact sedans have been out of the spotlight lately, with buyers falling in love with sports crossovers instead. But let’s say you’re not a fan of a high-performance SUV and would rather spend your time in a sports sedan that hugs the road, there is still hope for you. The 2022 BMW M3 and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing keep the sports sedan segment alive.
How do they measure on paper? The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is powered by a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 472 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. You can get the CT4-V Blackwing with either a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic. The BMW M3 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft. The M3 is only available with a six-speed manual, but if you want an automatic, you can step up to the more powerful M3 competition.
While the CT4-V Blackwing and the standard M3 have comparable power specs, BMW also offers the more powerful M3 Competition, boosting output to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. The M3 Competition is also available with all-wheel drive, while the CT4-V Blackwing is only available with rear-wheel drive.
The M3 will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, while the CT4-V Blackwing is slightly faster at 3.9 seconds. Both cars have a nice sonic exhaust, but the CT4-V Blackwing’s exhaust has more of a sting.
The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is the more accessible of the two with a starting price of $60,390, destination included. BMW M3 pricing starts at $71,095.
Exceeding the specs, both the M3 and CT4-V Blackwing are fun to drive. The CT4-V is based on General Motors’ Alpha rear-wheel drive platform and features MagneRide dampers and high-performance traction management modes. The CT4-V Blackwing is agile and its chassis is always asking for more. The steering is almost perfect. It also has large brakes, which easily outperform the M3’s brakes.
The Cadillac V6 has good power on paper, but the low 6500-rpm redline takes away some of the fun. The engine has a wide torque curve and is ready to get the CT4-V Blackwing up to speed, but it misses the character that the M3 engine brings to the table. The good news is that when you’re ready to hit the road, the CT4-V Blackwing’s suspension is surprisingly smooth and certainly not as stiff as its predecessor, the ATS-V.
On the other extreme, the M3’s engine hits 7,200 rpm. As you would expect the Inline-six to be very smooth and the six-speed manual is perfect. The M3’s power comes easily and its steering is quick and responsive. From back to back through the valleys, the CT4-V feels a lot more stable on the road.
Going by how great both cars are on the road, there are a few differences in the interiors. Both interiors are luxurious, but the M3’s interior looks a bit more modern with a larger touchscreen. The M3 also has higher quality materials, from the CT4-V Blackwing with some parts in Cadillac that look like they came straight out of lower-priced General Motors models. But we expect the M3 to have higher quality materials, considering its higher price tag.
Ultimately, it’s hard to pick a winner between the BMW M3 and the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. The CT4-V Blackwing has excellent handling and great brakes. But we can’t ignore the M3’s powerful attributes, such as its impressive six-cylinder engine and perfect steering. So both cars are great, just don’t wait too long to decide, because luxury gas sports cars will be much rarer by the end of the decade.
