Richmond Hill, Ontario. On this day in 1972, the agreement that led to the creation of BMW Motorsport GmbH was signed. Over the past 50 years, on streets and tracks around the world – corner after corner, lap after turn – BMW M has built a passionate community of exceptional fans. And today, as we celebrate BMW M’s 50th birthday, it’s these enthusiasts who will get the present. The company now known as BMW M GmbH offers a limited-edition model exclusively for North America, the M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M.

Based on the 2023 BMW M3 and M3 Competition xDrive, the M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M will be offered in modern combinations of five iconic paint colors – one from each of the previous five generations of the M3. The legendary E30 M3 is represented in the vibrant non-metallic Cinnabar Red colour. The E36 M3 is evoked by the impressive Techno Violet. Deep Interlagos Blue taken from the E46 M3 deck board. Fire Orange III will be remembered as the limited edition Lime Rock Park Edition of the ferocious E92 M3. The Limerock Gray featured the rare and exciting F80 M3 CS. Two colors, Techno Violet and Interlagos Blue, have been revived for this version only, and starting in July production it will only be available on the M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M for model year 2023.

Regardless of paint colour, every M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M will be equipped with 826M forged wheels in a matte Orbit Gray color not available on the standard M3. Behind these wheels, customers can choose the standard M Composite brakes and select red, blue or black calipers, or they can choose the M Carbon Ceramic brakes with distinctive gold calipers. Motorsports-inspired exterior improvements from the M Performance catalog are also part of the package. Up front, the 50 Jahre BMW M Edition receives a carbon fiber front splitter. At the rear, distinctive M quad tailpipes are trimmed in carbon fiber and titanium, and the trunk lid is fitted with an M Performance carbon fiber spoiler, all of which complement the standard carbon fiber roof.

Classic BMW Motorsport emblems are fitted to the bonnet, trunk and wheel center caps in place of the usual BMW rounded edges. With overlapping semicircles in blue, navy and red, the anniversary logo is reminiscent of the original BMW M GmbH badge that was first used on racing cars in 1973.

When the doors are opened, the driver and passenger are greeted with “Edition 50 Jahre BMW M” lettering on the edges of the door sills. The inscription is repeated on an aluminum plate on the cup holder lid under the dashboard, accompanied by a reminder that the highly distinctive M3 is “1/500”. Customers can choose between standard M sport seats or the optional track-ready M Carbon bucket seats, upholstered exclusively in black Merino leather. Both seat designs feature a unique stitching pattern that uses M color stitching. These are complemented by 3-colour M stripes on the headrests. M stripes are also found on the foldable headrests for the outer rear seats.

The M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M will be available in a single, well-equipped configuration. Selection options can also be equipped at an additional cost.

Starting in model year 2023, all BMW M3s will feature the BMW Curved Display and the eighth generation BMW iDrive. The 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and the 14.9-inch control display are combined into a single, fully digital, high-resolution unit. The new BMW 8 operating system offers many options for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimedia control of the vehicle, navigation, infotainment and communication functions, as well as digital services.
