2022 BMW M3 Competition and i4 M50

536-HP 2022 BMW i4 M50 Almost Outperforms M3 Competition

Michael Cimari, BMWcar and driver

  • In our testing, the 2022 BMW i4 M50 hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, making it 0.2 seconds faster than the M3 Competition.
  • However, the M3 contest beats it by 0.1 seconds in the quarter mile and passes it past 80 mph.
  • The i4 M50 is the first electric motor to carry the M badge, and has 536 horsepower from two electric motors. The M3 Competition is the more powerful version of the M3, and has a 503-horsepower inline six-cylinder twin-turbo.

you welcome in car and drivers Test center, where we zoom in on test numbers. We’ve been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to enhance our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here). A more comprehensive review of the BMW i4 M50 2022 can be found here.

The 2022 BMW i4 M50 is the first electric car to bear the M brand. While it’s not a full-fledged M car, it has what it takes to keep up with M’s high-performance compact sports sedans and coupe in a straight line. in car and driver After testing, it beat the M3 Competition to 60 mph and, surprisingly, beat gas-powered “M lite” cars like the M340i and M440i. When it finally arrives, we have no doubt that the first fully electric M car will be a serious performer.

In our testing, the i40 M50 hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, 0.2 seconds ahead of the rear-wheel drive M3 competition and nearly half a second before BMW’s initial claim. And that’s even with the i4’s 1,243 pounds more than the M3 competition in our scales. That’s partly from an 81.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors. One motor powers each axle, and the two combine to produce a total of 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque. As a more powerful version of the M3, the Competition model gets 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque from the twin-turbocharged BMW S58 3.0-liter, which is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M3 competition all-wheel drive is now available, and while we haven’t tied our test equipment to one, we expect it to match the i40 M50’s performance to 60 mph.

However, the M3 Competition displays the horsepower-to-weight advantage and outperforms the i4 M50 in the quarter mile. The M3 passes the M50 after 80 mph and takes off in 11.6 seconds at 124 mph, while the i4 lags 0.1 seconds and sprints at 4 mph. The i4 M50 benefits from all-wheel drive and instant torque from its electric motors, despite going from 5 to 60 mph 1.0 seconds faster than the M3. Test results also show the gap in pass speeds, with the M3 requiring an additional 0.9 seconds to go from 30 to 50 mph and 0.7 seconds to get from 50 to 70 mph.

The M3 Competition is more capable in the corners, hitting 1.03g on the skateboard compared to the i4 M50’s 0.97g. The M3 was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, while the i4 M50 arrived with Pirelli P Zero Elect PZ4 rubber. Its lateral grip puts it more in line with the M340i, which has a maximum cornering ability of 0.96g in our tests and is also equipped with Pilot Sport 4S tires like the M3. At the 15th Annual Lightning Lap event, we picked the M3 Competition xDrive around the Virginia International Racecourse in 2:53.5.

The 2022 BMW i4 M50’s starting price of $66,895 is a relative bargain for what you get in terms of performance, as the M3 Competition costs an additional $7,100. Sure, you can’t have a pure rear-engine and manual transmission setup in an i4 like our long-range M3 test car, but the numbers speak for themselves. We can’t wait to see what the full electric models will eventually be on the test track. Check back for the full test and review of the i4 M50 soon.
